Where Your Voice And Your Words Go

UnType hears everything you dictate, so you should know exactly what happens to it. I'm Rudy, I built it, and this is all of it in plain English.

Your Voice Stays On Your Mac

Speech turns into text on your Mac. Your audio is never sent to me, to Anthropic or to anyone else.

UnType keeps each recording on your Mac for 30 days, then deletes it. The text of each dictation stays in your History on your Mac until you delete it in Settings, under Privacy. Neither one is ever copied to my server for storage.

Some Text Goes To Anthropic To Get Tidied

Short, clean dictations get finished on your Mac and go nowhere. When one needs more work, like a correction mid sentence or a long ramble, UnType sends the text to Claude, made by Anthropic. In my own use that's about 1 dictation in 10. You can switch this off in Settings, under Privacy, and then nothing leaves your Mac.

Here's what goes:

Phone numbers and your saved text get swapped for a placeholder first, so those stay on your Mac.

The text passes through my server in Sydney on its way to Anthropic. My server doesn't save it.

Anthropic is a US company, so this text does leave Australia. Their commercial terms stop them training their models on it. They delete it within 30 days, unless the law says to keep it or it's flagged for breaking their usage policy. Flagged text can be kept for up to 2 years.

If You Send Feedback

The Feedback page in the app sends me what you type, your email, and your UnType and macOS versions. It goes through Resend, my email service, and lands in my inbox. It never includes your dictations or recordings unless you type them in yourself.

What I Keep About You

This site has no ad trackers. I don't sell your details to anyone.

Getting Your Data Removed

Everything UnType saves on your Mac is yours. Delete the app and its data folder and it's gone.

To see or remove what I hold, email support@rudygoel.com. Payment records stay for as long as tax law requires.

If I don't sort out a privacy problem for you, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
